At the Lucerne Lake Summit, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, reiterated the nation’s enduring dedication to peace and stability in the region through diplomacy and dialogue. He underscored the profound effects of recent conflicts in the Middle East on various global sectors, from the economy to international trade and energy markets, impacting billions of lives worldwide.
Highlighting the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz as a prime example, the prime minister illustrated how regional tensions could severely disrupt global energy supplies and critical trade routes. He emphasized the importance of securing this key maritime corridor, framing it as a shared international duty. The current period, he noted, stands as one of the most challenging for the region, characterized by uncertainty and rising tensions. Throughout these challenges, Qatar has remained a proponent of diplomatic engagement, advocating for dialogue over confrontation as the sustainable way to achieve security.
Al Thani expressed optimism about the recently signed memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, viewing it as a pathway to development, cooperation, and prosperity in the region. He described the agreement as a meaningful step forward, fostering trust and paving the way toward a more stable future. However, he cautioned that the memorandum’s signing is merely the beginning, with technical negotiations ahead that are crucial for turning promises into tangible results.
Reaffirming Qatar’s role on the international stage, the prime minister pledged the country’s continued collaboration with global partners to bolster dialogue, uphold international law, and promote trust. He emphasized Qatar’s commitment to supporting peaceful solutions that enhance both regional and global security. At the summit, Qatar, joined by Pakistan, played a mediating role in discussions between the U.S. and Iran, working towards reaching a comprehensive and lasting agreement based on the memorandum of understanding.
