In a move demonstrating the deep-rooted ties between India and Qatar, Indian Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, traveled to Doha to offer condolences after the demise of Qatar’s Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. This visit emphasized the enduring friendship and strategic cooperation between the two nations.
While in Doha, Rijiju met with Qatar’s current Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to express the Indian government’s and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s sympathies. The minister highlighted the significant contributions of the late Father Amir, describing him as a visionary figure who was instrumental in Qatar’s growth and in enhancing the partnership between India and Qatar. Rijiju also noted the Indian community in Qatar deeply mourns his loss and holds his accomplishments in high regard.
Previously, Prime Minister Modi himself had acknowledged the Father Amir’s impact, referring to him as a genuine friend of India who played a crucial role in fortifying the bilateral relationship. In honor of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani’s memory, India declared a day of national mourning on July 13, 2026. During this day, the national flag was flown at half-mast across government buildings, and official entertainment activities were suspended.
