Qatar recently took part in a significant meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Committee of Ministers of Social Affairs and Social Development in Bahrain. The gathering aimed to bolster regional cooperation in areas such as social welfare, family support, and community development. Represented by Minister of Social Development and Family Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi, Qatar engaged in discussions that highlighted the importance of enhancing coordination among GCC member states and sharing expertise to address social challenges.
A key focus of the meeting was the implementation of existing Gulf-wide decisions and the development of a work plan for 2026–2030. The ministers explored how to improve social programs and adapt regional initiatives to meet the evolving needs of communities. Among the topics discussed were disability rights, with an emphasis on implementing the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the proposal to create a regular Gulf forum for disability-related issues.
The impact of artificial intelligence on children’s rights was another critical area of discussion. The ministers examined the opportunities and challenges posed by emerging technologies and deliberated on plans for a regional report on children’s rights and their future in GCC countries. Additionally, there was a focus on furthering coordination on childhood protection and welfare.
Women’s issues also featured prominently in the discussions, with an emphasis on strengthening cooperation and considering new initiatives to advance social development throughout the Gulf region. This reflects the broader goal of the meeting to enhance collaboration and develop joint initiatives among GCC member states.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Minister Al Nuaimi attended a 2026 ceremony that honored prominent individuals and projects in civil social work. Several Qatari figures and initiatives were recognized for their significant contributions, underscoring Qatar’s active role in promoting social development within the GCC.
